Hey there Army wives!

September has come and gone and we are in full swing of October. It’s officially fall. How did THAT happen? I know here in southern GA it still feels like summer, but I am sure that is soon to change. The nights are getting darker sooner and I know a time change is upon us. Best of all, one of my favorite holidays, Halloween, is just around the corner.

Everything at the Crooks household was buzzing this past month with Kevin’s return from Iraq for mid tour leave. We trekked half way across the country to visit family in Missouri. The good news is I conned my hubby into buying a new van for the next trip. A van? Who me? Yes, I have officially hit suburban mom status. Don’t laugh; I used to and had to eat it when my time came.

As always things are settling back into the “new normal” now that Daddy has returned, and we are getting back to our hectic schedule trying to fit way too many things into too few hours and somehow remain sane. I know you know the feeling.

This month on AWTR we start off by talking about a very important topic, Breast Cancer Awareness. We follow up with a show on Parenting & Discipline (I could really use this show sometimes with parenting on my own – how about you?), then a dose of Army Wife Life with the bloggers from LovingASoldier.com, and finishing off with Army Life Humor with Jan Donahue, and Dodging Divorce with Wayne Nance. WOW! That’s quite a lineup.

The new news on AWTR is that you can hear us on the radio – the REAL radio – as of this month under the new name of Military Wife Talk Radio. Co-produced by AWTR and CinCHouse.com we bring our shows to the real radio waves. You can hear us in four different markets. Visit MilitaryWifeTalkTadio.org for more information.

Crooks & Henderson are partnering up once again and going on a road trip! Look for us doing a Field ExerciseTM in Fort Bragg, NC on October 17th! Registration and information can be found at FieldProblems.com.

Lastly, ATWR’s platform Blog Talk Radio has added some wonderful new features. Check us out in the new LIVE chat room during our shows at 8pm EST on Monday nights.

I hope each of you has a wonderful month – a spooktacular one at that – and I’ll see you on the airwaves!

                                                 With Pride,

founders of Daddy Dolls, Inc.: Tricia Dyal and Nikki Darnell

Daddy Dolls Inc. has been given the wonderful privilege of participating in Snowball Express' 2007 Event.  Snowball Express is a non-profit organization which creates a network of hope for families of fallen Military Heroes.   Each year they work with hundreds of corporate sponsors to create new memories and a few days of joy for children whose lives have been shattered by the loss a parent serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Our goal is to be able to offer every child at this event their very own Hug-A-Hero™ doll or Photo Pillow.  Each doll costs $25, is 17" tall and has the image of a missed loved one printed onto it. Our dolls have helped thousands of children cope with missing a loved one, and offer a comfort and emotional outlet that a simple photograph cannot.

To make a donation by credit card, simply go to DaddyDolls.com and click on Operation Hug-A-Hero™.  Checks can be mailed to Daddy Dolls, Inc., PO Box 42253, Fredericksburg, VA 22404.

The Gumball Fix

Over the course of any marriage, your spouse does or says things that make you think “How could he do this to me?” or “If he really loved me, he wouldn’t have said that” or “This is so hurtful, I can’t even believe this is the man I married.” Likewise, now and then, he has these thoughts, too. Often times, we are told simply “Sometimes you have to forgive and forget. Period.” For most of us, this really doesn’t work.

Here’s the solution to recovery: The Gumball Fix.

For ease of explanation, I’ll describe The Gumball Fix from his vantage point – meaning you’re the one who did something hurtful or hateful to your husband. Envision you have a big empty container. Day in and day out, you consciously make an effort to do and say many kind things. Examples of “doing”: Unexpected favors, a big hug for no reason (you can imitate/give phone hugs if he’s deployed); mail him funny, sexy cards. Examples of “saying”: “Thanks for unloading the dishwasher. It makes me feel like you really appreciate me.”; “I think you’re such a hunk in those ratty shorts that are your favorite!”; “I’m still glad I married you.” With every one of these acts, you pour more and more gumballs into the container. You continuously fill it so that the container stays (at least) almost full, i.e., your husband feels (and sees) your relationship is robust, enjoyable and happy.

Lo and behold, along comes the day when you do the hurtful or hateful thing. He’s now mad and angry. Gumballs are removed from the container. However, there are so many gumballs that you have a “cushion.” The relationship suffers only temporarily, i.e., he knows in his heart that you still love him deeply. You apologize (sooner rather than later) and take the time to discuss the problem at hand. Thus, he may not forget what you did, but the large amount of remaining gumballs makes it is easy to forgive and move forward – together.

Sheryl Kurland is author of the elegant coffee-table book Everlasting Matrimony: Pearls Of Wisdom From Couples Married 50 Years Or More. 75 couples, "real-life" relationship experts, reveal the keys to a loving, lasting and fulfilling relationship. Tolerance on Aisle 6? Maybe not.

I recently came across this really good recipe for a military wife.

1 1/2 cups patience

1 lb. adaptability

3/4 cup tolerance

1 t. courage

Dash of adventure

Combine the above ingredients. Add 2 T. of elbow grease.

Marinate frequently with salty tears. Pour off excess fat. Sprinkle lightly with money.

Season the mixture with international spices.

"Knead" the dough until payday.

Bake 20 years or until done.

I decided I was going to make one of these military wives" if it killed me. I mean, I'd heard about how good they were. I have the recipe. So what if there is no picture as to what the final product might turn out to be. I can cook, right?

Interestingly enough, shopping for these itmes at your local grocery store is not near as easy as finding the recipe. It is not as if there is a big sign that boasts "tolerance" can be found on the shelves of aisle 6. My local drugstore doesn't even carry "courage", I've checked.
