Issue 8......designed specifically for Army Wives, November 2007 |

Hello out there fellow Household 6s!
It’s November – Turkey month! I wonder sometimes if turkeys can smell that their fate is about to be met? Poor turkeys.
Seriously though, it is the month to be thankful. Gosh, I have so much to be thankful for in my life as an Army wife. I am very thankful to be able to be a part of this great Nation. To live somewhere free from fear and so full of hope is an amazing thing! I am thankful for my wonderful husband and our children for their amazing bravery. I am thankful for each of you and how much you have impacted my world. I am thankful that we were able to go out on the road this year and meet so many wonderful people like last month’s trip to Fort Bragg, NC where Star and I made all kinds of friends during our Field Exercise. So much has happened this year with AWTR and I am so very thankful for everything. We certainly have been blessed.
As Army wives I bet you are all gearing up for the holidays. This can be a particularly hard time for military families, especially during deployment. I know as Thanksgiving and Christmas rolls around this year in the Crooks’ household I find myself not near as “cheery” as I was last year. There is no one to help with the lights, no one to go shopping with, and no one to help me eat the big bird at Thanksgiving dinner. I have found a way around it though, and that is through my friendships with other military families. I encourage you to go out into your communities this holiday season and see what you can do to round everyone up into one big celebration. We are all feeling the same way. It just takes one person to make a difference. Go on….go….go ask your neighbor to split the apple pie! (Your thighs will thank you.)
This month is pretty busy around here. We are going to start off the month with USAA for a show on “Ho..Ho..OH!” also known as “Holiday Spending”. I can not wait to see what tips they will have for us. Army Wife Life takes place in the second week when the Loving A Soldier bloggers (www.LovingASoldier.com) join us for a show about “The Great Mommy Debate." Can women really have it all? Then we will get serious for a week with author LT Lee and his wife Ellen talking about their book “Back From War." We will end the month with Colleen Saffron from Operation Life Transformed stopping in to tell us about her new program for military families.
Happy Thanksgiving! I’ll catch you on the airwaves!
With Pride,

Ever Lasting! by Sheryl Kurland
Little Change, Big Fix When things aren't going particularly well in a relationship, the natural inclination is to pick on things the other person is doing wrong. As we all know, it takes two. In actuality, sometimes things are going astray as a reflection of how you feel about yourself. You externalize what you're internalizing, and that creates friction in the relationship. Perhaps you're tired, tired of yourself, in a rut, bored of your routine or the way you look, or you long to do some things that you're unable to do right now. Simple changes may provide a path to gaining a fresh feeling and new energy. Brush your hair a new way, wear more vibrant colors of clothing than you're used to wearing, move your furniture around, break a bad habit and replace it with a good one, lighten up your load by digging for your "laughter" button. Study the things that continually make you mad or frustrated, things that annoy you within yourself...and engage your creativity to devise ways to change them. When your approve better of yourself, you act in a more positive manner. By osmosis, your spouse picks up on these "vibes" and things can start shifting in a more favorable direction. Making little changes is not meant to over-simplify deep problems. But, little changes can result in big fixes. Sheryl Kurland is author of the elegant coffee-table book Everlasting Matrimony: Pearls Of Wisdom From Couples Married 50 Years Or More. 75 couples, "real-life" relationship experts, reveal the keys to a loving, lasting and fulfilling relationship. Calzones
Pillsbury French Loaf refrigerated dough marinara sauce pepperoni, black olives, mushrooms, spinach or other desired pizza "toppings" mozzarella cheese
* Open the dough and spread flat on a cookie sheet. * Cut in half for two large or four small calzones. * Put a small amount of sauce on the dough. * Add whatever toppings you like and top with cheese. * Fold the dough up and seal with your fingers. * Use a knife to cut a small slit in the top of each calzone. * Cook at 350o for about 20 minutes on a greased cookie sheet.
If you use wet ingredients like mushrooms or spinach, make sure you squeeze the excess water out. For the same reason, do not put too much marinara sauce in the calzone.
Serve with a side of marinara for dipping. You can also make a calzone without the marinara on the inside. |
