Volume 3: Issue 2......designed specifically for Army Wives, May 2008

Tara E. CrooksTara Crooks, Your AWTR Host

Hello out there fellow Household 6s!

It’s May 2008! May is an awesome month for military families as it is a time that the entire country stops to pay tribute to us for Military Appreciation Month. Of specific interest to our AWTR community, we celebrate Military Spouse Appreciation Day on May 9th.  Back in 1984 President Reagan proclaimed the Friday before Mother's Day of each year to be Military Spouse Appreciation Day. It is our day to stand up and be honored.

Have you ever heard that old expression “if the military wanted you to have a spouse they would have issued you one”? Aren’t you glad that’s not the way it is now? So am I!

Can you imagine an Army without spouses? I can’t. What we do is so very important to the life that we lead and the community that supports it. Our contributions are what make this big operation “tick”. We may not have sharp shooting skills or defuse bombs but we do save lives.

For everything you do: From...

Running Family Readiness Groups

            Planning Hail & Farewells

            Hosting a coffee group

            Organizing fundraisers

To…

Paying the bills

            Raising your children

            Running the household

            Feeding the dog

For…

            Countless sleepless nights

            Numerous care packages

And so much more…

THANK YOU!

From me to you, thank you for listening. Thank you for your support along our journey. Thank you for sharing your journey and empowering others. Thank you for your service to your family and your nation. You are irreplaceable. You are amazing. You are – ARMY WIFE!

HOOAH!

                                                                  Your “Household 6”,

The American Red Cross Provides Reassuring Link for Military Personnel and Families

April 03, 2008--The Red Cross delivers emergency communication messages on behalf of family members to members of the United States Armed Forces serving anywhere in the world, to include ships at sea, embassies and isolated military units. For American service members, the Red Cross is a trusted and reliable link that joins more than 1,000 military families each day with emergency communication messages regarding serious illness, the death of a loved one or the good news of the birth of a child. A Red Cross message with the verification of the emergency assists the service member's command in making a decision regarding emergency leave....

Mints on My Pillow

If you’ve been watching The Bachelor on ABC-TV, you saw one of the contenders, Amanda, pull a prank on the bachelor, Matt Grant, when he went to her hometown and met her parents.  Amanda hired actors.  The “mom” was sexually all over the bachelor.  The “dad” was nerdy-looking and his acting matched.  It was quite hilarious to watch.  Eventually, Amanda told the bachelor he’d been "punked," and out came her real parents.  Everyone had a great laugh.  This brings to mind the importance and value of “surprises” in a relationship.  Surprises keep things sizzling, on edge (in a good way), and intensify the friendship -- the foundation of any great relationship.

A couple married 50+ years shared with me a story of “surprises” that they did on each other.  The wife worked in a motel, and the housekeepers would put mints on guests’ pillows – a novel idea at the time.  She told her husband about this gesture, and he was impressed.  Her idea-mill was set in motion.  That night, when he pulled down the sheets to climb into bed with his beloved, there were mints on his pillow and a love note to go with it.  This set his idea-mill in motion.  The next night, his wife found a $100 bill under her pillow!

In another “surprise” story, a wife shared with me that when she and her husband traveled by car, inevitably, when they got on the highway, he would ask her to reach in the back seat in his briefcase to get out the map.  His habit was annoying -- Why couldn’t he get organized ahead of time?  Recognizing this irritation and small shortcoming, the husband decided to lighten things up a bit.  Next trip, same thing, “Honey, can you reach into my briefcase and pull out the directions?”  “Hmff, why do I have to do this every time we go on a trip?” she muttered yet again.  This time, when she reached into the briefcase, there was a tiny gift-wrapped box awaiting her – a lovely new watch!

Have you done any “surprises” lately for your spouse or significant other?  Or vice-versa?  Send me your story at
sheryl@everlastingmatrimony.com -- and I’ll share it in a future column!  (I’ll keep the names anonymous if you desire.)
