Hello out there fellow Household 6s!

Spring has sprung in Savannah, GA! Yes, yes, I know most of the northern part of the United States is still covered in a blanket of snow. I guess I should thank my lucky stars to have the opportunity to be stationed in Southeast Georgia! Technically the first day of spring is not far off, March 20th to be exact, so you don’t have too much longer to wait to see the tulips bloom no matter where you live.

This time of year is always a time that I think of “renewing”. I don’t know what comes over me. I always want to clean the garage, attic, and closets and donate all of the old clothes and toys. I bet I drive my family insane. It must be related to the fact that it is also a very busy time of the year for the military and military families. This time of year is when most of us are moving around to different locations (i.e. PCSing).

There are also some big “celebrations” this season, like Military Saves week – February 24th, to March 2nd. In April and May we’ll celebrate the Month of the Military Child, National Volunteer Appreciation Week, and Military Spouse Appreciation Day. WOW!

We’re as busy as ever here at AWTR bringing you tons of information and resources. We start of March by bringing you Dr. John Izzo to teach us the five secrets we must  know before we die. I wonder what they are. Sure to be a great show! March 10th the American Legion Auxiliary joins us to teach us what they are all about. March 17th--Happy St. Patty’s Day--we bring in our Patriot Sponsors, USAA, to talk about how we can recession proof our households! With gas prices skyrocketing and the economy looking unstable, this should be a very informative show! March 24th we have a very fun and interesting show with LTC Thurmond from AAFES.

Finally, and yes, this deserves its very own paragraph, we end the month on March 31st with the most distinguished and honored guest I feel has ever graced the AWTR airwaves – Dr. Gary Chapman author of the Five Love Languages. I cannot tell you how very excited I am to speak with Dr. Chapman! Be sure to tune in!

As always – be empowered and be proud!

                                                                   'Till next month,

Can You Endure the Real Marriage Litmus Test?

The secret test to find out if you're really Mr. and Mrs. Right just may be found at a local yard sale.

When my husband and I decided to have a yard sale, we had no idea we'd be testing our marriage in the process. Who knew that yard sales were a true test of marriage resilience? Preparing for a yard sale with your spouse can be a wondrous experience, but it also brings up a spectrum of raw emotions between a couple.

"What do you think dear? Should we get rid of our old television that works only after banging on it three times?"

We cuddled in bed together watching hours and hours of amorous old movies, so when my husband asks about the TV, it's a difficult decision. The struggle has little to do with the actual TV set--and everything to do with kissing memories goodbye.

The challenge continued. As he rummaged through tools, appliances and gadgets (my definition of "junk"), I refrained from teasing. As I shuffled through mugs, dishes, plant pots, baskets and souvenirs (his definition of "junk"), he resisted making insulting remarks.

Together, we struggled to deal with separation anxiety, impending loss and grief. It was a seriously tough task, but it proved to be a bonding experience for our relationship. We toiled. We talked. We laughed.

Then, the day of our neighborhood yard sales arrived. In addition to all of his so-called treasures, he created a pile of "free" stuff: a menagerie of old tires, miscellaneous hubcaps, electrical cords and wiring, odd pieces of wood, pierced window screening and the like.

Husband after husband-shopper was drawn to the "free" collection like a bee to honey. Wife after wife could also be heard, shrieking, "What do we need that for?" like a bee stinging her "Honey."

At day's end, our yard sales profit was $238.10. The following Saturday, we went on a date with our found money. We went yard sale shopping!

I say, "Such adorable dishes! I haven't seen aluminum drinking glasses like these in years! This little table will be perfect for serving drinks on the patio!" (More clutter, he's thinking.)

He says, "I've never replaced my broken 7 foot ladder and this one is in great condition! These screwdrivers fill in my missing-size gaps! Here are the X-Box games I've been looking for! (Enough already, I'm thinking.)

Neither of us understands the other's desperation, but we've learned to pick our battles. Happily, we loaded up our haul, and with the $24 that's left, we took ourselves out to lunch. The deli sandwiches were scrumptious, and we shared an order of French fries and vanilla milkshake with two straws.

Yard sales have deepened our love for each other; we feel renewed and joyful. Another season has proven that our differences are tolerable and our likenesses breed excitement and intrigue.

Amongst the trash and treasures (for us and other couples), the best find may be that your relationship or marriage is, indeed, a treasure you can both agree on.

NMFA Operation Purple® news

~condensed from NMFA's FAQs, www.NMFA.org

How is Operation Purple® different from other summer camps?  The Operation Purple camp program was created in
2004 to help military children struggling with having a parent deployed. The goal of
Operation Purple® summer camps is to impart the message on these young heroes that “They Serve Too”. The program aims to help military children, of various ages, learn coping skills which deal with deployment related stress, foster relationships with other military children in similar circumstances, and most of all have fun.

Who is eligible to apply to the camps?
Any military child can apply; however, priority is given to those children who have a parent/guardian or family household member deployed between May 2007 and September 2008. If all spaces are not filled with campers who meet the deployment criteria, the remaining camp slots are filled with any military child from any service branch, the National Guard, Reserve, PHS and NOAA. “Deployment” is defined loosely as we recognize TDY and travel can often take service members away from family for significant periods of time.

Does this camp include counseling or therapy?
There are Mental Health Consultants present at camp to assist with children who might be homesick, having problems adjusting, or to recognize problematic behavior. They are present to serve as a resource for the camp and children and, depending on the situation, may speak with a child if requested by staff or the child. They will be instructed to conduct activities or games with the children which address coping skills or communication. They are not on site to conduct therapy and/or counseling sessions with the children.

Information on camp locations will be available in early March and applications will be available on March 24, 2008. Please sign up for Operation Purple® email alerts to get updated information on the camps.
