Tara E. CrooksTara Crooks, Your AWTR Host

Hello out there fellow Household 6s!

Happy April! BIG NEWS this month! Army Wife Talk Radio celebrates the end of its third year of broadcasting. Year four? Bring it on! We’re still going strong! We are stronger…as a matter of fact!

Here’s a little history lesson for you. Back in April of 2005 I had my first show. The first shows were quite hilarious. They were pretty much the Tara Crooks show because there wasn’t much else to talk about back then. We didn’t have cool guests and fun segments like we do now. We certainly didn’t have a live chat room! We started with 37 listeners. Eventually, and I say that lightly because in retrospect it was really like wildfire, our concept caught on. Now, we’re having a stare down with our goal, the number 1,800. We’re almost there!

We have, since April 2005, completed over 150 shows with many wonderful guests. In January of 2007 we partnered with Blog Talk Radio (BTR) to bring “life” into AWTR and started our first LIVE show. Now, with over 50 “live” shows in our archives we are one of BTR’s longest running programs.

In addition to AWTR, Star Henderson and I have created Field Problems™, a syndicated question and answer column for the military. We have visited Fort Stewart and Fort Bragg with our wonderful spouse seminars – Field Exercises™. Our LovingASoldier blog  now boasts over 18 Army wife bloggers that share about their journey EVERY DAY so that others can join along and find comfort in their own lives.

Our team is stronger too! More than a year ago we added Sarah News 6 to our team to do the headlines each week. You might have noticed Sarah as our co-host lately too! She is a wonderful addition to our lineup. Recently we grew again. We added Leah and Gwen to our lineup. They’ll be helping us with marketing and advertising of AWTR. Leah is also doing our Newbie Minute. Not to mention, several of you have volunteered to be AWTR representatives at your local installation.

We start the fourth year with anticipation of something “bigger”. There is so much in store for you this year. The team at AWTR will debut a new look and a new website this Fall. We have huge news too – we’re coming to a post near you! With four Field Exercises planned for 2008, and some seriously generous sponsors we’re going to see a lot of you in person very soon!

Know what else? I have loved every minute of this. There are ups and there are downs, but I have no regrets. There are families out there that count on us each and every week. Heck, I won’t lie – I need this community to survive too. It is your love and appreciation, your encouragement and your dedication that drive me to keep this dream (and my own journey) alive. So, to all of those of you raising a “household” on your own, to those of you loving a soldier near or far, to those of you who share this journey and this opportunity to serve with me – I love you! Thank you for allowing me (and the team) to travel alongside you.

To another successful year and many more to come! I believe in you.

With All The Pride In The World,

                                                                  Your “Household 6”,

Dear Tara & Star,
I work for AAFES on my post. It never ceases to amaze me that spouses would rather shop at Wal-Mart than at their PX. We have amazing bargains! Can you share with your readers that AAFES
really is a great deal?

5 Years of VA Health Care for Combat Veterans

Washington--Military veterans who served in combat since Nov. 11, 1998, including veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, are now eligible for five years of free medical care for most conditions from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This measure increases a two-year limit that has been in effect nearly a decade.

"By their service and their sacrifice, America's newest combat veterans have earned this special eligibility period for VA's world-class health care," said Secretary of veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake.

The five-year deadline has no effect upon veterans with medical conditions related to their military service. Veterans may apply at any time after their discharge from the military--even decades later--for medical care for service-connected health problems.

The new provision, part of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 signed by President Bush on Jan. 28, 2008, applies to care in a VA hospital, outpatient clinic or nursing home.  It also extends VA dental benefits -- previously limited to 90 days after discharge for most veterans -- to 180 days.

Combat veterans who were discharged between Nov. 11, 1998 and Jan. 16, 2003, and who never took advantage of VA’s health care system, have until Jan. 27, 2011 to qualify for free VA health care.

The five-year window is also open to activated Reservists and members of the National Guard, if they served in a theater of combat operations after Nov. 11, 1998 and were discharged under other than dishonorable conditions.

Veterans who take advantage of this five-year window to receive VA health care can continue to receive care after five years, although they may have to pay copayments for medical problems unrelated to their military service.  Copayments range from $8 for a 30-day supply of prescription medicine to $1,024 for the first 90 days of inpatient care each year.

There's Something In You I Don't Like About Me

What characteristics attracted you to your spouse? There are probably a few qualities that you admired because they are features you wish you possessed in your personality.  For instance, a shy person may be attracted to an outgoing person.  Or someone who’s disorganized is attracted to an organized individual.  If you asked your spouse the same question, he or she would likely include some of the “opposites” of the characteristics you listed.  The premise for the attraction is: “There’s something in you I don’t like about me.”

Interestingly, over time, these admirable qualities can spark arguments.  For example, a husband and wife go shopping at an appliance store for a new washing machine.  The woman is soft-spoken while the man is direct and gregarious; they were attracted to these particular qualities in each other.  So, the couple agrees upon a washing machine with a price of $600, and it’s already on sale.  The husband then proceeds to “bargain” with the salesperson to get an even better price.  The wife cringes at her husband’s behavior and walks away in embarrassment.  She’s quite mad about this scene.  After all, the salesperson might work on commission and he has to make a living, too.  Right?  The salesperson ends up knocking off $75 more to cinch the deal.  Of course the wife is happy about the additional savings but she still has a pit in her stomach over her husband’s action.   However, this is what she chose to marry.  She really has no threshold to scold her husband.

Thus, the moral of the story is…If you find yourself getting steamed up over something your spouse did or said, stop and ask yourself if you’re reacting to the “There’s Something In You I Don’t Like About Me” syndrome.  You may be quite surprised!
